Their faces carry the weight of ten-hour shifts — oil stains on shirts, lint clinging to sleeves, backs bent from machines that never seem to rest. Some rush toward the microbus stops, afraid of missing the last ride to their rented rooms. Others linger near tea stalls, stretching stiff shoulders, lighting cigarettes, letting the noise of the city replace the noise of machines.

Among them is Ramesh, 27, a machine operator who came to Kathmandu from Sindhuli three years ago. He shares a single narrow room with four other men in a crowded alley not far from the ring road. Their mattresses line the floor edge to edge. At night, the room smells of sweat, damp clothes, and cheap cooking oil. Most of his salary disappears into rent, food, and money he sends home to his parents. What remains is barely enough for himself, and certainly not enough to build the life he once imagined.

“I didn’t come here to get into bad habits,” he says quietly, eyes fixed on the ground as buses roar past. “But sometimes… you just feel very alone.”

Kathmandu’s industrial areas — Balaju, Patan, Bhaktapur corridors — run on workers like him. Young men and women from villages across Nepal power the garment units, carpet factories, metal workshops, and small manufacturing lines that keep the city’s economy moving. Yet beyond production targets and wages, there is another reality, one rarely discussed openly: unprotected sexual activity among factory workers, shaped not by recklessness alone but by migration, isolation, shame, and lack of access to reliable sexual health information.

Life here follows a mechanical rhythm. Wake up early. Rush to work. Stand or sit at a machine all day. Return to a crowded room. Scroll on a phone. Sleep. Repeat. Weeks pass without meaningful conversation beyond work complaints and rising prices. For many migrants, family remains far away — a wife in the village, a girlfriend left behind, parents who think city life is prosperous. Emotional and physical needs do not disappear just because circumstances are hard, but there are few healthy spaces to talk about them.

Health workers who have interacted with labor populations say loneliness plays a bigger role than people assume. When individuals live away from partners for long periods, when stress piles up and privacy is scarce, decisions are often made in moments rather than planned. Some workers form casual relationships. Some visit sex workers. Sometimes alcohol becomes part of the evening, blurring caution.

And in those moments, protection is often missing.

Condoms are not exactly rare in Kathmandu. Small pharmacies and shops sell them. Health posts distribute them. But access is not only about supply — it is about comfort. Many workers say buying condoms feels embarrassing. The shopkeeper might know them. Someone from the factory might see. A simple purchase can feel like a public announcement.

“If I ask for condoms, people will judge me,” says Sunil, a 22-year-old helper in a metal workshop. “They’ll think I’m that type of person.”

In a society where open discussion about sex is still taboo, silence becomes the default teacher. Myths spread easily in such silence. Some believe only sex workers carry infections. Some think a healthy-looking person cannot have a disease. Others assume that a single unprotected encounter is harmless. Pleasure, peer influence, and the idea that “nothing will happen this time” combine into risk.

Knowledge about sexually transmitted infections exists in fragments. Many workers have heard of HIV, but fewer understand how other infections spread or that symptoms can be mild or invisible. Burning during urination, unusual discharge, or sores are sometimes ignored, hidden out of fear that someone might find out. By the time pain forces them to seek help, the infection may have worsened, and even then, anxiety follows them into clinics.

A nurse at a small private clinic near an industrial area says workers often request secrecy above all else. They hesitate to give full names. They look over their shoulders. Some leave midway if they recognize someone in the waiting room. Government hospitals offer services at lower cost, but long lines mean losing a day’s wage, and that is a luxury many cannot afford.

Payday nights add another layer. Groups of young men gather in cheap eateries or cramped rooms to drink. Laughter grows louder, worries temporarily shrink, and plans form spontaneously. Saying no can feel difficult when friends tease or question masculinity. Decisions taken in such moments rarely include a careful search for protection.

For married workers living away from spouses, the situation becomes even more comp

Mahendra Chalise The metal gate of a garment factory in Balaju screeches open just after sunset, and workers spill out onto the dusty roadside like a tired river finally released from a dam.
