Gorakh Shamser Rana is the First Nepali CEO of Standard Charter Bank Nepal Ltd :- (Son in Law of Late King Birendra Bir Bikram Shan Dev)

When it was first registered as a Joint Venture Institution, currently, it is a key member of the standard charter group, holding a 70.21 percent ownership stake, while the remaining 29.79 percent is owned by the Nepali Public. Standard Charter Bank Nepal Limited is the only international Bank operating in Nepal and has achieved the prestigious [ICRANP-IR] AAA rating for the fifth consecutive year, recognizing its commitment to timely servicing of financial obligations.”
In Nepal, SCBNL operates a robust domestic network with 17 points of representation and dedicated team of over 487 staff, SCBNL are present in 52 markets and listed on The London, Hong Kong and Nepal Stock Exchanges.
Gorakh Rana is assuming the role of CEO at Standard Charter Bank Nepal (SNBN) from January 1st 2025. What makes Rana’s appointment significant is that he will be the first Nepali to lead The Bank, marking a historic shift in leadership at the bank with foreign investment.
Established in 1987, SCBN had exclusively relied foreign leadership for nearly four decades. While prominent Nepal Bankers such as Sashin Joshi, Anil keshari Shah and Parshuram Kunwar Chhetri have held CEO roles at other banks after their tenure at SCBN, The bank itself had never before entrusted a Nepali employee with the top position.’
Rana’s elevation to CEO marks the beginning of a new chapter in the bank’s operations. His appointment not only represents a significant milestone for the institution but also reflects a broader recognition of local talent in Nepal’s banking industry by the SCBN group.
Rana’s Journey with SCBN began in 1994 in the retail and private banking department. By 1996, he transitioned to corporate and institutional banking, where the steadily climbed the ranks over the years he held several key positions including relationship manager, senior credit manager head of client coverage and Head of Global Banking and Commercial Banking.
On January 1, 2022, Rana was promoted to Deputy CEO, paring the way for his eventual elevation to the top role.
At present yet Chairman of SCBNL Mrs. Zarina Daruwala, he replaces Anirvan Ghosh Dasti Dar Who complete his term in December last 2024.
